Frank 593 - Good til September 14, 2010
October 28, 2008: It was announced today that Ottawa-based Frank Magazine and its website, efrank.ca, have ceased operations. This development does not - and will not - impact Frank Magazine's Atlantic Canada edition which will continue to publish every two weeks in Halifax.
John Williams
Editor, Atlantic Canada Frank
It's been labelled a rag, dismissed as a scandal sheet, and in 2002 Antigonish Bishop Colin Campbell actually declared reading it a sin.
But like it or not, for the past 20-plus years Frank Magazine has consistently provided readers from Baddeck to Bermuda with their bi-weekly dose of news, satire, opinion, and humour. Inspired by U.K.-based Private Eye and born from the creative minds of Halifax Daily News founder David Bentley and veteran journalists Lyndon Watkins and Dulcie Conrad, Frank first hit newsstands in November 1987, determined to introduce to Atlantic Canadians a new measure of fearless journalism.
Frank by Name, Frank by Nature
More than 500 issues later, with its original maxim - Frank by name, Frank by nature - firmly intact, Frank continues to defy industry trends. By refusing to pin its existence on advertising revenue, Frank retains a measure of editorial freedom other publications can only imagine.
Though Frank's initial notoriety hinged as much on its myriad spelling mistakes, grammatical blunders and no-nonsense layout as its penchant for pricking the egos of the so-called establishment, the 32-page tabloid v. quickly proved itself an invaluable news source. In April 1991, Frank revealed exclusive details of the Nova Scotia Tory Party's secret Buchanan "slush fund" and two and a half years later broke the news that sex-assault allegations involving former Liberal premier Gerry Regan were under investigation by the RCMP.
More recently, in August 2006, Frank was the first to report that Premier Rodney MacDonald - less than two months removed from a family-focused provincial election campaign - had split with his wife Lori-Ann. This past April, Frank's coverage of Juno star Ellen Page caught the attention of New York City's Village Voice and celebrity columnist Michael Musto.
